.. Quick as a sprinter off the blocks, the property rights and agribusiness interests are manipulating their legislative puppets and introducing bills to strip Montana of it's heritage and wildlife.

.. In a June post we noted in our "Pure Shit Department" that transgenic trout would be here before you could blink an eye. It's happening as you read this.
.. According to a recent post in grist the FDA, (yes, our very own,) is about to accept the new fish as just fine for commercial production. These piscene  freaks are about to hit the waterways because of "Junk Science."

.. We, (yes you, your neighbors, our neighbors, and us,) have allowed this to progress to the point of no return by failing to take action to protect our fisheries. This is an invasive species of the most heinous type. This is a threat that can't be solved by the cute switch away from felt soles on waders.
.. When these critters are unleashed in the environment, (despite all assurances to the contrary - can you say Jurassic Park?) they will destroy both fresh water and marine fisheries. This is a situation about to make the BP fuck up fiasco look like child's play.
.. As pointed out in an excellent blog post by Jill Richardson, ". . .  if sloppy and dishonest science is all that's required to pass a product through the U.S. regulatory system, what other disasters lie in our future?"
.. Should you, like us, choose to resist this latest bullshit scientific advance, the FDA is accepting comments about it's stupidity decision. The note in the Federal Register a couple of weeks ago directs us to the morass of red tape we need to negotiate to make a comment.
.. The conscientious efforts of Jill Richardson are laudable and we thank her for a concise statement of the "The Creepy Science Behind Genetically Engineered "Frankenfish" About to Enter Our Food Supply Unlabeled."
.. In a move that shows great insight into the problem, Washington, Oregon, and Maryland have banned genetically altered fish in order to protect their native species. California on the other hand, is set to issue permits for research and production of similar critters - LINK.
.. By the way, if you're not of a contrarian mentality like we are, please read the note on the FDA website about all the wonderful advantages that this development will bring to the world. Yes, our very own FDA just loves this stuff and has been touting it for 5 years. Does something smell fishy to you?
.. Way back in 2006 we noted in a post the attempts of science to produce fish specifically adapted to Yellowstone National Park. That note explored the relationship between the pout fish, ice cream, and life at high temperatures. And the beat goes on!

.. This creation is a dry fly that stays dry in wet weather. It's a bitch to cast but the rewards are well worth the effort.

Damn Butts

IT'S A FILTHY HABIT

We Know

.. It's no secret that we smoke cigarettes on occasion. We also hate the habit, (addiction,) and it's byproducts. Pollution of the body is detrimental to our health. Pollution of the environment is inexcusable.
.. We are sensitive to the unthinking discard of butts. Cigarette butts are more than just unsightly. They are poison pills in the environment.
.. A recent post by Mark Powell over at Blogfish alerted us to the damage that these damn butts do to fish. Read it HERE.
.. From the News Center at San Diego State University comes a note about the environmental hazards of cigarette butts and the damage they do to fish, and other marine life.
.. What's this have to do with fly fishing in Yellowstone National Park? Plenty!
.. Last October as we joined the conga line at The Barns Holes we noticed an enormous amount of cigarette butts in the parking areas. These butts are leaching poison into the streamside environment.
.. There's a new crop of them there already this year. We do know one thing - they don't breed.
.. We doubt that many fly fishers have noticed them, but they are there. We are particularly sensitive to butts because of our addiction. We pick them up. We stash them. We dump them in the trash. Good for us. Maybe not!
.. There is a movement afoot to have the damn butts be classified as toxic waste. It's not a bad thought. An estimated 1.69 Billion pounds of butts end up as litter each year. These are the ones scattered by irresponsible smokers. They get concentrated by sewage systems and other mechanisms and form pockets of poison in our environment - even the parking areas at the Barns Holes.

.. One of the byproducts of popularity is debris. Certainly not all fly fishers are inconsiderate litterbugs. Yet, to beg the question: 'Where did the butts come from?' is only sensible. Besides the elbows and cursing, and guides searching for big tips in the world's slowest conga lines; there's a new hatch at the Barns Holes. Butts, Butts, Butts.
.. At this time of year, and this particular place, there are few visitors other than fishers. The butts are fresh and not rained or snowed upon. Whoever did it should be thrashed.
.. The images below were selected from more than two dozen. We picked them up and cursed the rush to the conga line. Bless their hearts, may they sleep well; and well they may.
.. We did not join the fray. Twenty minutes later there were a dozen fish caught out of sight and sound of any fishers.
