    The Other News

    LABOR DAY NEWS
    Expand Logging
    salmon love tongass
    MORE LOGGING, MINING, DRILLING ??
    -------
.. Since last July a bit of news seems to be flying under the radar. It's a simple story. USDA has been ordered to expand logging and open the Tongass National Forest to mining and, drilling for oil and gas.
.. Earth Justice has continued to champion the "Roadless Solution" eliminated by the ninth circuit court in the Bush administration. The roadless solution keeps logging out of areas with no roads.
.. Now, expansion of roads and more logging are proposed by the current administration in order to increase the logging of old growth forest.
.. There should be no need to point out the damage to streams that is done by road erosion. There should be no need to point out the effects of removing carbon sponges from the world's largest temperate rain forest (it's in Alaska folks.) We know these things.
.. We did not know that:
    "From 2008 through 2013, the Forest Service spent $139.1 million for timber sales in the Tongass that brought returns of only $8.6 million. In short, taxpayers are losing 93 cents for every dollar spent selling ancient Tongass trees." {{LINK}}
.. It is estimated that 40% of he wild salmon left in Alaska use the headwaters of streams in the Tongass National Forest. These are streams in roadless areas in the forest. There are about twenty wilderness areas in the Tongass National Forest.
.. The current administration is actively working to exempt all of the forest from protections currently in place. We thank MOLDY CHUM for pointing out this other news[LINK.]

    飞钓广泛流行于欧美的溪流钓法,以钓取凶猛掠食性鱼类为主。飞钓的装备和技术,和我们通常的钓鱼方法,差别还是满大的。其抛投入门技术相对其他钓鱼方法来说,难度也较为高。飞钓在北美和欧洲,是很流行的一种钓鱼方法,但国内似乎就很少,关于飞钓的介绍也很少见。我涉足飞钓有一段时间了,渐渐地迷上了这种钓法。现简单介绍一下这种钓法,包括概述、装备介绍、飞投技术介绍、Fly拟饵制作四部分,希望对大家了解这种钓法有所帮助。因水平钓技所限,错误在所难免,欢迎本网大虾指正。
    飞钓就是使用特殊的飞钓线(Fly line)、飞钓杆(Fly rod)和人工拟饵(fly),利用独特的挥舞技术和线本身的重量,将线和饵打出去,然后慢慢回收线,利用不同手法和水流状况表现拟饵的活动,吸引鱼儿攻击上钩的一种钓鱼方法。
    下面对一些常见的对飞钓的理解做些解释,特别是澄清一些常见的误区,可以使大家对飞钓有一个初步的了解。
    一:飞钓方法仅仅适合于在溪流中钓鱼
    这种理解是错误的,飞钓其实适合于绝大部分钓鱼的场合,例如大海中钓鱼,静水湖泊钓鱼,沼泽池塘等等,涵盖几乎所有的场合,唯一的是飞钓的抛投距离一般小于30米,因此有些用大海杆远抛的情况下,飞钓可能不适合使用;
    二:飞钓一定要站在水中钓
    不一定,飞钓可以在岸边,也可以在船上,码头、甚至礁石上,都可以飞钓。当然最常见的是穿水靠,站立于水中,这个主要是和它的抛投距离以及要求需要较多的空间有关,站在水中,可以更接近聚鱼点,挥舞的空间也大,遮挡少。
    三:飞钓钓法只针对上层鱼
    这个完全不对,飞钓方法可以针对各种水层鱼。针对不同鱼种和习性,要使用不同种类的飞钓线和拟饵,例如全浮线、半浮线、沉水线等等,拟饵也有干湿之分,重量也不同,有的漂在水面、有的沉底。拟饵的制作本身还可以加各种重量的眼睛型铅坠(Bead chain和Lead Eye),可以适用于不同水层,因此它可以钓任何水层的鱼种。
    四:飞钓只对凶猛掠食性鱼类有效
    不完全是这样。由于飞钓只使用假饵并使之运动,对凶猛掠食性鱼类确实更有效。但鱼类攻击动饵的天性都是一样的,因此只要拟饵选择、拖动表现对头,各种鱼都会攻击。我看过用飞钓钓鲤鱼的视频,看起来也很有效。
    五:飞钓是不用铅坠和浮漂的
    大部分情况是这样的,但也有例外。一些特殊情况下,Leader上会加一至两个小咬铅,以便使得沉水速度更快一些,但同时对抛投技术要求较高。浮漂其实有些人常用,叫做“Strike indicator”,但飞钓的浮漂比较特殊,一般是很小的橄榄球状漂(蚕豆大小、很轻,固定于Leader后端)、或者就是Leader后端拴一撮颜色鲜艳的毛毛。我们普通的浮漂不适用于飞钓的抛投。
    六:飞钓是很难掌握的一种钓法
    飞钓的入门确实比较难,这是事实。飞钓可能也是所有钓鱼方法中最讲究技术的一种,飞钓抛投讲究严格的节奏、正确的姿态和使力、讲究舒畅放松,逆饵的表现手法也多种多样。初学者需要在真正出动飞钓钓鱼前,在无水无钩的(草地上等)状况下,练习一段时间,直到你能掌握最基本的技能,才可以首次出动。这还早!开始真正钓鱼时的地形、空间、水流、风力等影响,还需要很多时间逐渐体会适应。一旦融会贯通以后,举重若轻,随意变化,那当然就不再难了。一般建议新手要找师傅带一下,或者参加一个学习班,会省很多力气和时间。
    七:Fly fishing,是世界上最优美的钓鱼技术和动作
    绝对正确!可以这么说,一旦你进入飞钓的门槛,你必定会对它着迷!随着技术的提高,你会进入一个全新的境界:飞钓,就像跳一种优美的舞蹈,以蓝天、雪山为背景,绿树、碧水作舞台,任你自由的挥舞。你会逐渐集中精力于这个运动本身,对鱼获不再苛求,身心慢慢融化在纯净的大自然中……

.. There is a movement afoot that gives visitors the courage to defy safe viewing of thermal features in Yellowstone National Park.
.. Wandering off the boardwalks and onto the thin crust of thermal features is dangerous and can be the cause of serious injury or even death.
.. Just yesterday the latest example of this behavior was recorded on video at Old Faithful. The offender was booed by the law abiding visitors and then flipped them off as he left the vent of the geyser.
.. Other incidents include actions at Grand Prismatic Spring , (sentence = four days in jail and a $1,040 fine,) and West Thumb Geyser Basin.
.. Multiple citations have been issued in the last few days. The park has not yet issued a statement and court records are not available for public viewing.

    EPA Bashes The Environment

    BIG CUTBACKS
    Exceeded Goals
    much more to come

    -------
.. We worry about the lack of concern that the general public exhibits, (at least here in West Yellowstone.)
    -----
     NEWS REPORT

.. The Environmental Protection Agency "exceeded" its goals in cutting back environmental regulations during the first two years of the Trump administration, according to an internal watchdog report.
.. The EPA's inspector general evaluated how the agency responded to an executive order from President Donald Trump issued in January 2017 mandating federal agencies control costs by cutting regulations. The EO asked that for every one regulation an agency issued, two regulations be cut.
.. The EPA cut 26 regulations, saving the agency more than $96 million, and created four new regulations -- far more than the 2-to-1 ratio the White House had requested, according to the report. The agency saved roughly $6 million more than the Office of Management and budget requested.
.. In the administration's first year, "the EPA had the highest number of deregulatory actions of any federal agency," according to the report.
.. These actions include rollbacks of environmental regulations that govern water, air and greenhouse gas emission levels.
.. In the past two years, the EPA changed what waters are protected under the Clean Water Act, rolled back an Obama-era plan that would have reduced carbon emission from coal-fired power plants, and proposed a rule that would allow fewer restrictions on hazardous air pollutants, among other changes. The inspector general's report gives a fuller picture of how aggressively the agency has been in slashing regulations; the data shows the EPA has been the most successful in this goal.
.. While the inspector general evaluated the agency's regulatory rollbacks, it "did not evaluate human health and environmental impacts or trends," the report said.
In a response memo, the Acting Deputy Administrator Henry Darwin said the agency is "pleased" with the Inspector General's conclusion that the EPA is "in compliance" with the executive order.
.. "The EPA has successfully and fully implemented the requirements of the Executive Order," Darwin wrote in his memo.
The Sierra Club, an environmental advocacy group, did not see the report's findings as positive.
.. "The EPA should not be bragging about cutting vital safeguards for our air, water and climate. Going above and beyond Trump's arbitrary benchmark is not an achievement, it only proves that Andrew Wheeler couldn't care less about the health and safety of those he is supposed to protect," said Matthew Gravatt, the Sierra Club's deputy director for federal and administrative advocacy.
.. The inspector general recommended the agency be more transparent about its regulation changes moving forward, suggesting the agency set up a public portal where people can see updates about the agency's actions. It also recommended the EPA's Regulatory Reform Task Force, the part of the agency working on regulation changes, publicly release progress reports on their work.
