     -------
    le comte
    .. Once upon a time there lived in Sardinia a royalist named Joseph-Marie de Maistre.
    .. After the French Revolution, he strongly advocated for a "social hierarchy" and "monarchy" as the best form of government.
    .. In 1811, as ambassador to Russia, he opined that:
    Toute nation a le gouvernement qu'elle mérite.
    .. This quote is often mistakenly attributed to Abraham Lincoln or Alexis de Tocqueville. It has a couple of renditions in translation to English:
    >> "Every country has the government it deserves"
    >>  "In a democracy people get the leaders they deserve."
    .. He was, of course, speaking sarcastically about the chaos that was erupting in Russia at that time.
    .. The attitude expressed has, however presciently, become wonderfully predictive as our country moves through a contemporary nexus of political miasma.
    .. Another observation from Joseph-Marie, comte de Maistre:
     Les fausses opinions ressemblent à la fausse monnaie qui est frappée d'abord par de grands coupables et dépensée ensuite par d'honnêtes gens qui perpétuent le crime sans savoir ce qu'ils font.
    .. This is also significant for our times and is translated as:
    >> False opinions are like false money, struck first of all by guilty men and thereafter circulated by honest people who perpetuate the crime without knowing what they are doing.
    ..Reminds us of contemporary politicians and, many fly fishers. Enough said!

    An Oath and Resolution

     WHO IS AMERICAN ?

    The presidential oath of office, as stated in Article II, Section I, Clause 8 of the U.S. Constitution, is as follows:

    "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

    -------

    RESOLUTION Condemning President Trump’s racist comments directed at Members of Congress.
    Whereas the Founders conceived America as a haven of refuge for people fleeing from religious and political persecution, and Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and James Madison all emphasized that the Nation gained as it attracted new people in search of freedom and livelihood for their families;
    Whereas the Declaration of Independence defined America as a covenant based on equality, the unalienable Rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and government by the consent of the people;
    Whereas Benjamin Franklin said at the Constitutional convention, ‘‘When foreigners after looking about for some other Country in which they can obtain more happiness, give a preference to ours, it is a proof of attachment which ought to excite our confidence and affection’’;
    Whereas President Franklin D. Roosevelt said, ‘‘Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists’’;
    Whereas immigration of people from all over the Earth has defined every stage of American history and propelled our social, economic, political, scientific, cultural, artistic and technological progress as a people, and all Americans, except for the descendants of Native people and enslaved African-Americans, are immigrants or descendants of immigrants;
    Whereas the commitment to immigration and asylum has been not a partisan cause but a powerful national value that has infused the work of many Presidents;
    Whereas American patriotism is defined not by race or ethnicity but by devotion to the Constitutional ideals of equality, liberty, inclusion, and democracy and by service to our communities and struggle for the common good;
    Whereas President John F. Kennedy, whose family came to the United States from Ireland, stated in his 1958 book ‘‘A Nation of Immigrants’’ that ‘‘The contribution of immigrants can be seen in every aspect of our national life. We see it in religion, in politics, in business, in the arts, in education, even in athletics and entertainment. There is no part of our nation that has not been touched by our immigrant background. Everywhere immigrants have enriched and strengthened the fabric of American life.’’;
    Whereas President Ronald Reagan in his last speech as President conveyed ‘‘An observation about a country which I love’’;
    Whereas as President Reagan observed, the torch of Lady Liberty symbolizes our freedom and represents our heritage, the compact with our parents, our grandparents, and our ancestors, and it is the Statue of Liberty and its values that give us our great and special place in the world;
    Whereas other countries may seek to compete with us, but in one vital area, as ‘‘a beacon of freedom and opportunity that draws the people of the world, no country on Earth comes close’’;
    Whereas it is the great life force of ‘‘each generation of new Americans that guarantees that America’s triumph shall continue unsurpassed’’ through the 21st century and beyond and is part of the ‘‘magical, intoxicating power of America’’;
    Whereas this is ‘‘one of the most important sources of America’s greatness: we lead the world because, unique among nations, we draw our people -- our strength -- from every country and every corner of the world, and by doing so we continuously renew and enrich our nation’’;
    Whereas ‘‘thanks to each wave of new arrivals to this land of opportunity, we’re a nation forever young, forever bursting with energy and new ideas, and always on the cutting edge’’, always leading the world to the next frontier;
    Whereas this openness is vital to our future as a Nation, and ‘‘if we ever closed the door to new Americans, our leadership in the world would soon be lost’’; and
    Whereas President Donald Trump’s racist comments have legitimized fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives—
    (1) believes that immigrants and their descendants have made America stronger, and that those who take the oath of citizenship are every bit as American as those whose families have lived in the United States for many generations;
    (2) is committed to keeping America open to those lawfully seeking refuge and asylum from violence and oppression, and those who are willing to work hard to live the American Dream, no matter their race, ethnicity, faith, or country of origin; and
    (3) strongly condemns President Donald Trump’s racist comments that have legitimized and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color by saying that our fellow Americans who are immigrants, and those who may look to the President like immigrants, should ‘‘go back’’ to other countries, by referring to immigrants and asylum seekers as ‘‘invaders,’’ and by saying that Members of Congress who are immigrants (or those of our colleagues who are wrongly assumed to be immigrants) do not belong in Congress or in the United States of America

    .. It took us some time and, it took some effort AND, we are still digesting parts of it. We have felt that it's more important than a few nights at the pub.
    .. The Mueller Report is an important bit of our national soul. We will continue to peruse it.
    WE WONDER:
    .. Can you have an opinion in your ignorance? Fly fishers have practice at this.
    .. We hear so much ignorance from professed Democrats and professed Republicans about the report. Sort of like barroom chatter about the size of fish or human protuberances.
    .. No one that we have talked to has read the report, (small sample but telling.)
    IS THIS THE WAY IT IS ?
    .. Of course we know that Kentucky politicians are right next to God when it comes to forming Republican opinion; no need to read.
    .. On God's other side is the disenfranchised former Secretary Of State who has the straight line to truth for Democrats.
    .. The American populace, (and fly fishers?) have no need to read, given these sterling examples of honesty and integrity.
    REVEL IN YOUR UNDERSTANDING
    ..The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don't know anything about.  Oh well.

    .. So it's finally time to visit some friendly waters in Yellowstone National Park.
    .. We have been blessed with near perfect conditions on our west side waters: water below bank level. slow waters, clearing waters, trout catching temperature waters, cool overcast skies, bugs hatching, fewer than normal visitors, seasonal help  at the feather merchants.
    .. Here's the current river data:

    >> Firehole at Madison Junction,
    >> Gibbon at Madison Junction,
    >> Madison at West Yellowstone.

    A Distant Land

    SALTY STUFF
    Sandy Stuff
    salubrious south
    GENERAL PRACTITIONER
    -------
    .. Once upon a time in a far distant land we would fish for those critters with scales at Ponto State Beach, Swami's Beach and, in Batiquitos Lagoon.
    .. Those fish were stronger than trout but not quite so colorful.
    A FISH OF MYSTERY
    .. Ah those fish; minds of mystery.
    .. One at a time, schools of hundreds, on the surface, down deep, in the surf - all kinds and all places.
    .. And oh, the smorgasbord that those fish would revel in: sand crabs, shrimp, prawns, worms, octopus, snails, little bits and large bits - whatever comes their way.
    .. What a mystery is the mind of the fish! An even deeper mystery is the mind of the fisher. Fish are opportunistic predators and gobble what looks good and is close by. Fishers are tradition bound and read books about what flies they should use.
    PONTO PRAWN
    .. Fish are alert and twist and swim to meet the occasion of a food source. They wait, they pause, they sprint, they slash, they experiment and learn.
    .. Fishers use flies of tradition: this for the surface - that for subsurface. This for Spring and the other for Fall. Fishers are good with the accepted conventions of their peers and the feather merchants "that know!"
    .. Our neighbors are a bit more adventurous. Even we will often flaunt convention as well. We are not rebels. We mostly use conventional tackle and, mostly use conventional flies. It's the herd instinct that engulfs most fishers of the fly.
    .. But there are times when deviation and rebelliousness take over. At those times we have an attack of creative thinking capricious whimsical thought.
    PONTO PRAWN
    .. Our neighborhood trout eat more than just the fly imitations offered up by feather merchants and guide books. They eat snails. They eat leeches. They eat crayfish. They have a widely variable diet.
    .. {{SEGUE}} Years ago,  (the tradition continues today,)  a savvy owner of a neighborhood camp ground and fly shop sold crawdad imitations for fishing on the Madison River, [LINK-C1.] With a little effort on the interwebs it is possible to find folks that know about the crawdads in our waters, [LINK-C2.]
    .. There have been occasions when just the four of us took enough mud bugs to have a pleasant evening on the river sands and enjoy a sunset accompanied by a course of heads and tails. Not your typical Montana shore lunch dinner.
    SWAMI'S SHRIMP
    .. We are now in the midst of the "SPRING SORTING." This is a time when the accumulated flies of decades are put in some sort of order.
    .. We bumped into some Pacific Coast beach flies that have lain unmolested for decades.  By golly our trout should eat them.
    .. So we now have a new sackful of alternate fly patterns.
    .. Off we go.
    -----
    .. Sunny and 60's. The transition to local chaos is underway. Cars from foreign lands are taking the shopping streets by storm. Fancy rod tubes and windshield mounts are sparse but visible.
    .. It's full Spring and the melt is on and, fishing is in the air.

    BILLION $$$ WAR
    Sailboat Race
    two years to go

    -------

    .. The boats are faster than our old fishing car. The sail boats competing in the 36th AMERICA'S CUP CHALLENGE, in 2021, are just now taking to the water for trials and shakedowns, [HISTORY.]
    AMERICA'S CUP
    .. The most recent integration of computer technology and aqua-dynamics have brought these boats to the point of flying on the water.
    .. Many years ago, (in another life,) we were the proud owners of a hole in the water that we poured all of our extra cash into. A telling experience and a lesson well learned.
    .. Long ago we did venture to Perth, Australia to see TEAM USA finally lose the Cup - for the first time since winning it in the first race in 1851.
    .. The trophy cup, (named after the ship AMERICA,) has a history almost as storied as the race to possess it, [CUPL.]
    .. Peripheral to our interests, now, is this competition that has expanded to include some competitors of the economic giants of our world - both countries and corporations.
    JUST FLYING ALONG
    .. For the cynical; the history of the race can be viewed as the recent history of our economic expansion around the world. We're waiting for the first competitive entry from China. A large and, largely unknown stage for international competition on multiple levels. SUCH A DEAL!
    .. The competition has progressed to the point that 'mules' and complete test boats are built - just to test new ideas for the formula. The one design formula is supposed to allow competition to be equalized among the boats. It is analogous to FORMULA ONE racing.
    CHECK IT OUT
    .. BUT, and it's a big but - some teams always manage to find loopholes and fudgefactors that give them the advantage. Thus the technology and skills are advanced.
    .. The next challenge will be in boats using the foil cant system, [FOIL.] Many of the current test boats, (costing hundreds of thousands of dollars,) are on the water [WATER.] Such is the nature of testing and perfecting concepts and, hardware and, software, [CLASS RULE.]
    .. We've come a long way in the last 170+ years. Big business is required for big sports, (NBA, NFL, PGA, etc.) Now we can watch.

    Easter In The Park

    WET AND WILD
    Wind, Rain, Snow
    a wet wonderland
    WELCOMING COMMITTEE
    -------
    .. Such a magnificent three days in Yellowstone National Park. All the splendid vistas and all the quixotic presentations of weather have been on display. It's presenting us with a soft drizzle at the moment.
    .. Of course the casual visitor wants it to be bright sunshine and no breeze with billowing clouds in blue skies. That happens.
    MYSTERIOUSLY SOFT AND GRAY
    .. The majesty of the place is however, in fact, it's diversity from minute to minute and, place to place and, day to day and, season to season. To be able to experience rain and snow and sun in the same day is a wonder in itself.
    .. The neighbors appreciate this. They revel in it. They giggle at the idealizations of the casual visitor. They wonder at the foreign thought and superficial attitudes that decry an overcast sky or a bit of precipitation. My my.
    THE WAY IT SHOULD BE ?
    .. There is still snow on the ground. FOR SHAME! How could they!
    .. There is bison shit smeared all over the wet roads. You think that 'they' would do something about that.
    .. The damp and wet conditions have stifled visitation at the North Entrance. There is even some mud on the roads and Parade Ground Trails, [see it here.]
    .. Heaven forbid that shoes should get dirty on the way to the wet picnic benches. OOPS - forgot the poncho and drop cloth.
    LIGHT GREEN NOW
    .. It's not too surprising that the ungulates find the wet meadows where green is ready to eat. Some find them sooner than others.
    .. Wet feet do not seem to be a hindrance. Ah, diverse meadows.
    .. Not all the roads are open right now [LINK-R] but they will be - more or less.
    .. The park's roads meander through a wide range of elevations. They are built on a wide range of substrates. They follow a wide range of game trails and early stagecoach routes.
    FOOD FOR SOME
    .. The freeze/thaw cycles throughout the year cause upheavals and down-warping. Potholes, rips, tears, lumps, bumps, humps and breaks propagate throughout the year.
    .. Road construction is a given. Just another thing to whine about for the perfect world folks.
    .. Where there is no grass there is still food for some critters. It's fact of life that death occurs in Yellowstone National Park.
    .. People die. Animals die. Plants die. The death feeds the life. The sun and, the snow and, the rain all feed the life. Such a wonderful place - rain or shine.
    OLD FAITHFUL CABIN
    .. The park concessionaires and NPS personnel are busy getting rid of the many  'inconveniences' in preparation for the onslaught of visitors that will come to "do the park." Ought to be able to see it all in a day or two.
    .. Golly gee wiz. The damn roads and, construction and, crowds and, critters and, trees in the road cause slow travel; sometimes even delays.
    .. Of course there was never a plan to get out of the car, (SUV, MOBILE CONDO, CAMPER VAN, etc.) A leisure pace seems foreign to the mentality of the casual visitor to the park.
    .. One thing is certain - this park, (despite concepts to the contrary,) is not your typical city park. A day in the park can turn into a lifetime - and never experience it all or, even1/2 or, less.
    QUIET FOR NOW ON OPENING DAY
    .. The rivers and streams between the West Entrance and both Mammoth and Old Faithful are clear cold and at bank level.
    .. Color is just beginning to creep in, [ MADISON, FIREHOLE.]
    .. The Madison River at Cameron is setting new records every day [CAMERON.]
