    BACK FROM THE DEAD ??

    A NEW ITERATION
    Exigencies Of Living
    bye tom, we loved ya'
    WALLPAPER:  TOM AT REST
    -------
.. The TROUT UNDERGROUND is no longer a blog.
.. Over the years it had transformed itself into a commercial website, (like so many that masquerade as blogs,) and then a fly fishing juggernaut, and then a consumer of time and talent that threatened to wreak havoc with a growing family.
.. It then became a "paused" website. It is now in league with a marketing firm that is selling you 'stuff'.
.. We congratulate Tom Chandler for turning a time consuming labor of love into a successful commercial venture. It's a truly American success story: invent it, grow it, sell it.
.. You can read all about it below:
    >> What Tom has to say,
    >> What Yobi has to say,
    >> The reincarnation.

.. We'll leave the link in the masthead for a short time.

    Short Time Coming

    KISS YOUR FELT GOODBYE
    And Your Ass Too ?
will you sterilize your rubbers ?

    -------
.. Briefly: Montana introduces legislation to ban felt soled waders. Check out the posts at The Trout Underground and comments at The Headhunter. Read carefully the comment by Earl James. We're not home free yet!
.. The tons of soil and supposed included micro organisms moved around by wading fishers is documented in a masters thesis from MSU, (LINK.)
.. The proposed amended Montana Legislation is HERE. And, just like the U.S. Congress exempts itself from many of the laws it makes, Montana exempts it's employees and emergency personnel from the ban. Is there a message here?
.. We're sure that this is not a cure all; and, further believe that the wader manufacturers still need to go a long way into providing better gripping rubber, (or whatever,) soles.
.. We predict that sales of the wading staff will skyrocket in the near future.
.. We also predict that there will now be less cleaning of wading gear, (including the newly-sold wading staffs,) than prior to the legislation
.. How about some legislation mandating the cleaning of wading gear? See how far that boat floats!

    20 Years Later

    GRAYLING GETTING A CHANCE
We Had A Visitation Last Month
    'bout time
Photo courtesy of Center For Biological Diversity
    -------
.. From New West, (via Trout Underground,) we learn that the USFWS is reconsidering it's previously misguided decision about the value and precarious position of the Arctic Grayling in the lower 48.
.. We've loved this fish for years and had gone two years without a visitation until last month. Over the years we've posted a few notes about the plight of the gray ghost. Perhaps some sensibility has returned to the USFWS.
.. The status review was initiated in October of last year, (LINK,) and is ongoing today. The Center For Biological Diversity has been a key player in this long struggle. Many Montanans have also been active in the struggle because of our precious Big Hole River population. We appreciate their work.
.. Persistence has paid off and we're thankful for it. Read the finding HERE.

    Pete & Tom

    NEW LOOKS, FINE OL' SITES
    Click On Over
of gear whores and crystal balls
.. Pete over at FISHING JONES has revamped the blog again. Apparently not receiving the support he anticipated from his ISP. It's been just about a year since we noticed the other change in format.
.. As blogs come and go, (and sometimes come again,) Fishing Jones has provided a constant source of entertainment and information. We wish Pete better luck with his new ISP. If you'd like to see some fine photos -- check his Flickr Photostream.
    -------
.. Tom over at the TROUT UNDERGROUND has taken the time to pen a note about his gear whore policy and glance into his crystal ball about the future of fly fishing media.
.. From the early days to the present this blog has also been a source of insight and delight. The transformation to commercial blog has not dampened the wit or wisdom.
"I don’t know about you, but 50 degree water has a chilling affect on the ego and a relaxing affect on the mind."
.. Tom sees the 'plain ol' blog' as a dead end and views the future of blogs as traffic magnets for larger entities. Guess we'll have to fold our tent.
.. We, prompted by his post, take this opportunity to announce our very own gear whore / advertising policy:
1} send lots of money, you will not be acknowledged,
2} send lots of gear, we'll keep it and you will not be acknowledged,
3} send lots of requests for ad space, you'll join our spam file,
4} send requests for link exchanges, you got it figured out by now?
.. As we fade into oblivion we leave you with this sage insight:
"The world is shifting beneath our feet - and some days it feels like it’s spinning faster than it did ten years ago - and like everyone, I’m trying to make sense of it."
.. As Tom would say: "See you in the welfare line."

    Let's Have A Sandwich

just what is a local ?
    someone from pasadena ?
    someone from florida ?
    someone from chicago ?
    A WALLEYE ??
.. Everyone wants to be a local. Move to Montana, splash around a bunch of money, fence off your stream, build a castle with a 10-car garage and stock it with everything but a pick-um-up, and call yourself a local.
.. And now, there is a bill before our State Legislature to deny science and call the walleye a local. This is akin to making rock snot the state mascot.
.. Bless our legislature. They couldn't even pass a bill that affirmed state law, and now they are revisiting the insanity of defining what is a native fish.
.. The AP reports (via: Trout Underground) that Bob Gilbert, executive director and lobbyist for Walleyes Unlimited of Montana is busy pushing the bill. The walleye organization influenced the bill and will feed legislators fried walleye the night before Thursday's [[ tomorrow's]] hearing.
.. Let's not demean the fish! They're good in a sandwich and very good breaded and fried. But so is an oyster. So is chicken. So, too, is eggplant. So what?
.. If our legislature sells out for a chunk of fried fish you can bet that there will soon be public access to artificial impoundments only!
.. The mind boggles at the possibilities. What will they stoop to next?
.. Would they sell their sister for a meatball sandwich? We wonder what we could get for a 7-course dinner of Soy-Au-Gratin? With all the trimmings of course.
.. Let's concentrate on our real locals. Lets help the Cutts that are being hybridized out of existence. Let's cherish the Grayling. Let's adore the Bull Trout.
.. Let's get a grip and concentrate on the locals. Good grief Mable, let's not add fuel to the conflagration that is destroying fish and fish habitat at an alarming rate for an invasive perch.
.. Maybe the blessed law makers would consider a new flag as well. We'd vote for a $60,000 exotic S.U.V. as the new state new emblem. But rumors abound that there is already a design on the drawing board. We hope not.
.. We're going to have a sandwich. It's free, and it's in Helena.

    Writers Caught Fishing !

    FAMOUS DEAD WRITER
    AND FRIEND

    Secret Fishing Spot
    right next to the road

"And then he knew that there was where he was going."*
.. It's Thanksgiving morning and Ernie (with his unidentified friend,) are spied fishing at the hottest section of an unnamed stream in Idaho. Their break for photos was caught by astute underground shutterbugs who followed in the footsteps of the writers taking a break from their seminar "Wilde Tales & Wild Trout In Idaho."
.. The seminar attracts aspiring writers from throughout the western United States. Each year numerous writers gather to bask in the radiance of 'Pops' and hope that some bit of genius will rub off on themselves. They seek footsteps long since washed away.
.. Many "New Media" mavens are attracted to this hallowed ground. They fish and drink and carouse and enjoy the seeming solitude of rivers once pristine.
.. They eschew the streamer or giant nymph, and the chance for large trout from the reservoir in the hopes of tangling with a 13" bundle of native fury - fooled by a midge. Midges are often fished this time of year; and the trout are perpetually amused by the visitations.
.. Our savvy photographers, (tipped off by a very friendly waitress from Michel's restaurant,) arrived early and captured this image before the unsuspecting scribblers knew they were in the public eye.
.. The day was crisp and cool; in the upper 40's. Not much to write about - BUT, you can bet much mileage will be made of this mundane occasion. After all, it's the end of the season and there's only 1,300 fish, (8" or larger,) per square mile. Who'd fish a creek like that?
.. No pennies, cigars, or flasks were disposed of on this visitation. Many have been, and will be in the future; just not this time.

    -------
SALMON: The salmons ascend rivers in large groups or age classes and penetrate to their head streams to spawn. They are remarkably strong fishes, and will even leap over considerable falls which lie in the way of their communal progress.
LEMMING: Any of various small, mouselike rodents of the genera Lemmus, Myopus, and Dicrostonyx, of far northern regions, as L. lemmus, of Norway, Sweden, etc., noted for periodic mass migrations that sometimes result in mass drownings.
contrary: Resistant to guidance or discipline; "Mary Mary quite contrary"; "an obstinate child with a violent temper"; "a perverse mood"; "wayward behavior"
    -------
.. We're going to a lake close by and not in the park. Here's a bit of what happened there yesterday.

    The Heat Is On

    NORTHERN CALIFORNIA ON FIRE
    FIREHOLE JUST AS HOT
    Fish It Now
.. Finally, after some bit of color and high flows, the Firehole River is in great shape. There are bugs galore. There are fish galore. There are fishers galore. And the FFF is in West Yellowstone with sages of all stripes parading the streets instead of fishing.
.. Still high, the Firehole River is clear and the fish are looking up. Hatches of PMD's are getting more dense by the day, and persist into the evening Caddis hatches. It has been better, but not much.
.. The river is providing something for everyone right now. There is a good spinner fall, and the "before coffee crew" are scoring very well with light colored soft hackles, (size 16 - or so,) floated in the eddy's of the quiet stretches.
.. Another fly that is useful in the morning is the Yellowstone Morning Glory. Fish it in the film and hang on. This fly is best in mid-morning: that time between the beginning of the hatch and when you give up on the spinners.
.. By the time brunch is on -- 11:00 or so, the same soft hackle and Morning Glory can be drowned and serve as an emerger. If the hatch is up to snuff and a few clouds obscure the sun it's time for a bit of fluff on top. Many of the neighbors use a CDC dun, in size 16 - 18.
.. Should you pause for a late lunch at 4:30 or 5:00 you won't miss a thing and the caddis will start with the tail end of the PMD's. The Dark Peacock Herl caddis is doing fine, as is the Deer Hair Caddis that we borrowed from Jason Neuswanger over at the Trout Nut. Instructions and recipe for the dark caddis can be found at the Flyfishingconnection, (Recipe.)
.. Nymphing is an all day proposition because of the overlapping hatches and a two fly rig is very productive. We're using a Feather Duster up top with a Prince Nymph at the point. Sizes in the 14 - 18 range are fine.
-- The prospects for catching will increase with overcast days and the bug density is very high right now. There are even some BIG and little stoneflies for those fishers of a dredging bent. Silli-Legs seem to be the most prevalent fly on the river right now. We've used them in yellow and deep orange and done well. The rocky and riffled sections have held some good fish, (to 18"+) in very gratifying numbers over the past few days.
.. With little, (other than the afternoon showers,) precipitation forecast for a week or so, it looks like the Firehole season is upon us.
.. The most elbows are seen in Biscuit Basin, at the south and north ends of the Freight Road, and the riffles and runs in the Midway Basin area. A little walk will bring you to less crowded water such as the nooks and crannies of Pocket Basin.
.. Nez Perce Creek is barely fishable and still full of bears. This is truly adventurous water.
.. The Madison River has maintained its depth but clarity has greatly improved over the last week. Many have called the death of the stonefly hatch, but they are still hatching and they are still productive as lures. The big nymphs and surface flies such as Marcella's Trout Fly, and yellow Woolly Worms are wonderfully plebeian and magnificently effective. In fact, for those that want to catch some of the larger fish these two flies are all that's needed. Silli-Legs in various combination's of colors are also being used by the neighbors with good success.
.. The Gibbon River canyon is still a bit frothy and surprisingly swift. Color is down to a nice shade of pink and visibility is at about 3 or 4 feet. Just about any nymph is a good bet. We like: Yellow Feather Duster, Bead Head Prince, and Green Soft Hackle flies. The little meadows above the Norris Campground are holding small Brown Trout, (to 12",) along with the standard assortment of Brookies and rumors of the occasional Grayling. We missed our iridescent ghost last year and have vowed not to be so humiliated this year.
.. The snow is off the trail to Grebe Lake and all that's left is mud and more mud. Take a brief walk, (about 3 miles in,) and catch the most willing fish in Yellowstone. There are grayling and other dancers just starving for your two-fly rig. A floated soft hackle or elk hair caddis with a small Yellowstone Badger should fill your ego to gigantic proportions. That should provide the energy to get back out. Requirements are: BUG SPRAY, BEAR SPRAY, MOOSE ALERTEDNESS!
    -------
.. Catching should slow down a bit for the rest of this weekend, but the clouds and afternoon showers will be returning for next week. The snow pack will keep the flows up a bit; and should keep the water temperatures in the best range for a few more weeks. The Firehole River is still about 200 cfs above its seasonal average but the clarity is very good. Temperatures are within seasonal norms and showing their typical diurnal/nocturnal swings.
.. The Gibbon River is still the major contributor of color to the Madison River. It's running about 250 cfs above its averages and given the flows is surprisingly clear.
.. The combined discharge rates of the Gibbon River and the Firehole River have kept the Madison River at about 400 cfs above its 81 year seasonal norms. It's amazing that it's fishable at all; let alone as good as it is. It will get better next week as temperatures and clouds contribute to its catch-ability.
    -------
.. Well, the folks in Missoula are trembling as the ancient Chandler Toyota gasps its way toward paradise. Tune in to the Underground Adventure and see what kind of California Shenanigans invade the serene mountains of Montana.
.. An update of the California fires can be found at The Horse's Mouth. They also have an awfully nice image of the purrrfect pout.
.. Jason over at the Troutnut has added some superlative images of both bugs and water. There are some new wallpapers too. give it a click the next time you're interested in a bit of learned esoterica.
