    American Religion

    RETREAT TO THE TELE
    Gorge, Burp, Fart
    pretend it matters
    LOGO OF THE MOMENT
    -------
.. SUPER SUNDAY.  The brutality and glory of it all. This is the one day when the religious folks of all denominations are united in ritual celebration.
    NFL LOSES
.. It is the hour of the Super Bowl which, interestingly enough, is a term and title now owned by PepsiCo.
.. Thanks to the indecisive actions of the NFL; rights to the term have passed into corporate hands other than football. It's typical of the times we live in. A mere 25 Billion dollars bought the term and licensing rights. My, my, my [LINK.]
    THE GOLDEN MATUKA
.. We're waiting for someone in the crass commercialism of our age to start the licensing of terms like: Matuka, Dry Fly, Spey Cast, Spey Rod, Fly Fishing, Riffles, etc.
.. We may not live long enough to see it: some of you will. The brand conscious entrepreneurs of today will figure out a way to do it.
.. About twenty five years ago a local West Yellowstone fly fisher bought the assets and name of the defunct "Yellowstone Park Company." Look for that brand to rise again.
    -----
    FROM CLEVELAND TO L.A.
.. It is almost unAmerican to view this Sooper Ritual with amusement.
.. We do it with fear and trembling in the face of our neighbors who have retreated to their dens of revelry. We'll join them.
.. We'll regale them with the old stories of when professional football was a sport and the Rams were still in Cleveland.
.. Ah, Waterfield to Benton; the first 300 yard receiver in history. Still the fourth-most receiving yards in a game!
.. That brand didn't last long.
    -----
.. The spectacle will go on with little appreciation of it's magical transformation into commercialism. Hell's bells, the commercials attract as much attention as the doin's on the field.
    BEAD HEAD SOFT NYMPH
.. Wagers, rivalry's, fights, oaths of allegiance,  and of course snacks, beer, booze, and vomit will grace the celebrations. The great American mid-winter celebration is underway.
.. We're having a sedate breakfast prior to sauntering across the street to see how the neighbors are doing. Maybe some fish talk before the mindless behavior begins.

    Priorities

    A DAY FOR FOOTBALLS
    Today At 4:30 P.M. (MST)
    we saw the first one
    ..
    -------
.. Back then it was the "AFL-NFL World Championship Game."
It was not too big a deal and it didn't even fill the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
    THE CELEBRATED RAMETTES
.. Tickets cost an outrageous $12.00. The game was broadcast simultaneously by both CBS and NBC.
.. The Los Angeles Ramettes, (baton twirlers in baggy bottoms,) were the featured entertainment along with Al Hirt and a couple of college bands.
    'TWAS THE FIRST
.. Oh, the two teams that made their presence felt were the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
.. Vince Lombardy and Bart Starr prevailed by the score of 35 - 10.
    TAKE FIVE
.. Halftime entertainment included a brief smoke by K.C. quarterback Len Dawson, (later won the game in 1970.)
.. During the pregame, the University of Arizona band created a physical outline of the continental United States at the center of the field, with the famed Anaheim High School drill team placing banners of each NFL and AFL team at each team's geographical location. AND - 10,000 balloons were released.
.. This year, on this day, it promises to be far less entertaining as a football game but the spectacle should be a bit more grand.
    10,000 BALLOONS
.. Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara is smaller than the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and has been expanded for the game to hold 75,000 souls.
.. Tickets cost between $3,000 and infinity depending on the luxury boxes and other amenities. Parking for the masses costs just $150. The pretty people will have their Uber-copter deposit them in the VIP area.
.. According to Stub-Hub the average price for tickets is holding steady at around $5,000 and is nearly sold out. All this to see the Broncos and Panthers play a game that features teams that were non existent in the early days. A good cultural indicator.
.. Oops, the sun is peaking through the trees, breakfast is ready, and the fish are waiting. We'll be back for pre-game snacks.
