    Got Some . . . Need Some

    ABOUT 7" FELL
    Minus 1" Overnight
    week of warm ahead

    COMING ATTRACTIONS
    -------
.. Well, it continues. A couple of days ago it looked like winter. Had to shovel some snow.
.. We keep getting teased with some snow and then it goes away, (sublimation and melting.) Our visitors are quite enthused by our gentle weather. Our neighbors are beginning to worry about the fish come Summer.
    SIGN OF THE TIMES
.. The weather services are reporting a shrinking snowpack. Even the snow water content is showing negative numbers on a day to day basis.
.. Our only saving grace is the cool evenings. With the below zero evenings it takes a good bit of time to warm up during the day.
.. Peak temperatures are in the early afternoon and, since the sun is low in the sky oblique rays have a hard time doing their job on our dark masses.

    MAPS

    .. We'll keep you advised.
    -----
    THE WHITE MIDGE
.. For now the bright afternoons are sucking the midges up to the surface. Snow flies abound Between The Lakes.
.. It is a mixed blessing for sure - good fishing now and worries about the coming Summer.
.. The overcast usually breaks up nicely in the afternoon and allows the neighbors to get their park and town chores done before fishing.
.. The visitors are very appreciative of our community efforts to take up the slack during the government shutdown.
.. We're up early again, (age related - don'tchaknow.) Must put on some coffee to fortify the toilet angels and trash trolls.

    Tepid

    A WEEK'S WORTH
    What's Up ?
    winter's slow start
    WALLPAPER:  WET SPOTS
    -------
.. Even the sledheads are concerned. Yes Lilibeth, there is snow on the ground.
.. Yes Rodney, there is some powder up high, (along with avalanches: avalanche map here.)
.. For sure, Gastone, the alps are getting our snow and Big Sky is making their own.
    -----
    JUST LOOK AT THOSE NUMBERS
.. We marvel at the variety of weather that winter has thrown at us so far this year. We've had a genuine deep freeze and a few days of heavy melting. Roof slides seem frequent so far and, even some spitting rain has dripped in the warm afternoons.
    WINTER MIDGE
.. Now we're faced with some persistent warm numbers and wet snow for the coming week;  of course the neighbors are bemoaning the overcast and lack of midges below Hebgen Dam.
.. We are pleased to see the snow in the forecast. We need it. But, the wet snow combined with the warm weather, (into the 40's,) only means that most of the low and mid level deposits will accelerate their melt.
.. It's not too early to look at the snotel pages. Right now the snow water equivalency is not too good.
.. As part of a generalized northwestern dry spell we are in the -30% to -75% of the 1981 to 2010 normal,  ['SNO LINK HERE.]
.. As winter moves along it's merry way we'll keep you informed. Looks to be a roller coaster few months. Hopefully there is a net gain in snow water equivalent for the fish during the summer.
    -----

.. The neighbors are gearing up for the West Yellowstone ukulele celebration. it will be a week later this year. Mark your calendar for February 8-11 and come enjoy the revelry.
.. Some of our neighborhood guitar players have taken to the ukulele for messing around in the snow. No sense dragging a $4,000 wood box around in the snow when a $40 dollar plastic ukulele will do.

    Déclassé Breakfast - Attention Kids

    HARDLY HAUTE CUISINE
    Great Taste Treat
great for a stream side sandwich
    WALLPAPER: PB & J Crêpes
    -------
.. Try these fine PB & J  crêpes for something delicious and different. They are easy to make, will keep in the refirigerator for a few days, and will make your fishing buddies drool.
.. They are not not quite the traditional crêpe, these are stuffed with creamy peanut butter and strawberry preserves. They are topped with dabs of the same as well as confectioners sugar and a light drizzle of honey.
.. A 25 second stint in the microwave smooths the innards and brings everything together very nicely. They'll keep for a couple of days in the fridge and can substitute for a sandwich tomorrow or the next day
    -------
.. The recent spate of blindingly bright days have the snow flies indulging in mass sexual shenanigans along the Madison River between the lakes. You may have to post hole your way to the river - the pressure is light right now. Don't catch them all!

    Snow And Snow Flies

    FINALLY A DUMP
    Sleds Become Pertinent
    big fish and little flies
big flies and big fish too
    WALLPAPER:  FEELING BLUE ?
    -------
.. And the snow arrived on little cat feet, (sorry Carl.) It was a gentle winter storm with far less wind than anticipated. Fully 16" is blanketing the village and more in the high country. The temperatures are moderate and the blanket of white is a nice addition to the trails and roads.
DOWN WING MIDGE - SIZE 18
.. Some bits of local water are now only accessible by snowmachine. The USFS has issued an advisory and mentioned some closures for our favorite tracks. Saddle up like the neighbors do. It's time for the sleds.
.. As the winter matures we will be flinging smaller and smaller flies, (along with larger and larger ones as well.) The snow flies, or midges, or whatever they are, become an important adjunct to our winter arsenal.
.. We rely on the neighbor kids to provide us with the miniscule flies that are needed. The patterns are familiar and consist of bits of debris affixed to hooks in the size range of match heads.
.. Many of the flies are skillful renditions of recognized and named patterns. Others are just the right size - nothing more. A few are traditional black. Many are cream or white or brown. We use them and the fish eat them.
.. The snow has driven the casual visitors from the village. The fair weather fishers have long gone. Hunters skulk about in the dark of dawn or dusk. A few religious neighbors and knowing visitors are plying the fishing discipline with dedication that belies the weather conditions. Catching is somewhere between spectacular and outrageous - snow be damned!

    Not Quite . . .

IT ONLY GOT TO 47° F
    Winds Were Manageable
    neighbors vacate town
THE NEIGHBORS PAUSE IN THEIR LABORS TO QUAFF A BREW OR TWO
    -------
..Sunday was another pleasant and unseasonably warm day. The thermometers in town ran to 47° F and not a bit more. We were hoping for another 50° F. The day was "Squinty Bright," and sun block was a definite must.
.. Some of the brave neighbors probed the estuaries along the shore of Hebgen Lake for legal open water: it's a sport for the young and thick of body. Rumors of open water at the mouth of Grayling Creek persist - SO?
Size 20 winged midge with outriggers
.. Ice fishing is still in full swing and, (depending on expertise,) some fine trout dinners are being gathered up.
.. Smokies, (whitefish,) as well, are running to 3# and seem eager as the ice-out approaches.
.. The water around Campfire Lodge is getting a pounding - all the way down to Quake Lake. Fish are being taken on just about any subsurface offering in the size 10 to 14 range. Pheasant Tail Nymphs, Prince Nymphs, Feather Duster Nymphs, Shop Vac Nymphs, and winged midges, (size 20 - 24,) are getting drowned in abundance.
.. The extended forecast calls for a few more gentle days with some mixed rain and snow about to show up in the neighborhood.
.. There is a steady stream of cars running from town to the little bits of legal open water. There are quite a few non-recreational snowmobilers headed to the major estuaries as well.
.. The fisher folk of our village have abandoned their 'stool-warming' at the pubs during mid day and can only be found with their prehensile cheeks squoze down after dark - - SPRING FEVER HAS ARRIVED !
    -------
With the last few weeks of salubrious weather the Madison River is already bank-full

    Follow The Neighbors

    THEY SEEM TO KNOW
    Scope Out The Environs
    some really big images
    WWS - #2d
    -------

.. The neighbors are pretty cagey folks. They know where and when to fish. They know how to get there, and usually don't say much about it.
.. If you see two vehicles abandoned in an out-of-the-way area - near water - you better rig up.
.. Of course three's a crowd in some areas. But not in others. The Madison River is still fishing very well at Raynolds Pass.
.. The neighbors don't mind the drive in the winter. This winter it's about like summer driving. Even the access road is passable in two-wheel drive.
.. Small streamers, buggy grubs, wet flies, and nymphs will fill your dance card even in mid day.
.. The midges have slowed down just a bit, but the fish don't seem to mind.
.. Although the days are warm, (to 40 degrees,) the nights are cold enough to keep a bit of snow on the ground.
.. The trails to the river are well worn and the post-holes few, far between, and shallow at worst.
.. The resident sheep are licking salt off the road and do not seem to mind posing for a portrait. Maybe we'll go back tomorrow.

    Snow & Snow Flies

    SNOW DON'T SLOW MIDGES
    Blowin' & Snowin'
    only the neighbors dare
    -------
.. There's a winter storm warning. There's a pile of warm air riding up over the mound of cold air. There's a pile of snow on the ground and more coming. It may hit twenty below tonight. LET'S GO FISHING!
.. There are bucketfuls of midges being pounded by the monstrous snow flakes. There are barrelfuls of trout eating the bucketfuls of midges being pounded by the snow flakes. There are only two fishers between the lakes on the Madison River. There will soon be three.
.. Apropos of the moment Craig Mathews over at Blue Ribbon Flies has made his YouTube debut with a video about the midge.
.. Using his favorite zelon it only takes one minute and 55 seconds for him to tie the little darling. A hungry trout will gobble it in a much quicker tempo.

    They're Off

    A WONDERFUL START
    Two Mickey's And No Mouse-------
.. The artistic collaboration between Jeff Kennedy and Jason Borger is off and running. We'd post the images here but that would spoil the fun. Visit their sites, [HERE & HERE,] to see the results of these 30 minute wonders. Full technical details and commentary are included.
    . . . . .

.. Get over to the TROUT UNDERGROUND for a nice piece on the "Year In Review." It's just the thing for a snowy winter's afternoon.
    -------
.. The snow-pack is way down up here. The alternating cold and warm weather has kept the ice-clogged Lower Gallatin River at or above flood stage for a week and the weather forecast is not promising.
.. Avalanche danger is high or worse and the clear cold nights have produced more than the normal amount of surface hoar. It must be January!
.. Ice fishing has been so-so and the catching is about the same. The town is suffering another maggot shortage and the thrummers are not getting the job done. The Narrows at Hebgen Reservoir and down near the dam seem to be producing as many whitefish as trout. The whitefish are bigger and, better eating too.
.. A couple of the neighbors are scouting Between The Lakes today. Rumor has it that the snow flies are carpeting the banks of the Madison River around Campfire Lodge. Given the shallow snow cover the access has been better than the catching so far this winter.

    The Big Sleep

    MADISON RIVER UNMOLESTED
fish rise to midges in steam
    -------
..Took a quick Armistice Day trip to the enclave at Madison Junction to visit some friends & tell war stories.
.. The park is quiet. The snow has fallen. The fish are on the surface. They can tell what they are eating. We can't see a thing.
.. We'll be back here - rod in hand - in the Spring.
    -------
.. In the meantime we're going to keep tabs on CASTING OUTLOUD.com. He's having a good time letting us know the haps. This is a wonderful 'participation board.' Check it out; there's some substance.

Just How Deep Is It ?

    CABIN FEVER DAYDREAMS
    Sand, Sun, Fish, Golf
    the mind wanders
.. Whilst shoveling last night's 10" of snow from the sidewalk a vision appeared. The beauty of sand and sun and fish are ever with us in the depths of our winter wonderland. Snow feeds the streams and snow is the joy of winter.
.. It's also deep! This is the way it used to be. This is what we're famous for. Snow for trees, snow for streams, snow for trout. Thinking of the good things about snow leads to the mind seeking justification for watching the snow build. It will make the flowers bloom, it will allow the golf courses to be watered, it will give sustenance to all the lowland pleasures that the valley-folk enjoy.
.. We've noticed that the snow brings taxi drivers to local watering holes. They gather and share stories of winters past. The young ones marvel that the snow is over their heads - thus it always was. Is this normal? The question resounds in the quiet mornings and the hectic evenings. What do you do with all this snow? Where do you put it? Under the bed? In the closet? The questions are real, and the beginning of "Snow Wars" is upon us.
.. Neighbors fight neighbors for a place to dump the snow. Business vs. business in the quest for a cleaner access. City vs. state in the attempt to provide space for both cars and people. The snow can only be pushed so far. Then it's the skidsters and front-end loaders. Trucks and dump trucks. Pile it high, pile it higher, pile it still higher -- the sky's the limit. Push it into the next door neighbor's lot. Push it into his backyard. "My loader's bigger than your loader!"
.. In this environment a snow shovel has no chance. Alliances are formed: we'll get'em this year! Let's lease a 4-yard bucket. Let's get up at 3:00 AM! Let's take it to the dump.
.. We moved about a yard and a half of snow this morning and called it good. We hope that our bit of clean sidewalk goes unnoticed. We hope the plows are moving too fast to see the little empty space. We dream of sun, sand fish and golf. The mind does wander during exertion. Sixty-five years plus of weather and the young'ns think this is big. We've seen tunnels to front doors. We've seen streets buried until June. We've known the need for a door on the second floor.
.. Before snow blowers and the access to front end loaders it was a slow time of year. The snow came and we endured. The rich man used his tractor and that was that. Be nice to the rich man, you may get to your car by the end of May. It's still that way. But, now there are more rich folks. More loaders, more blowers, and the poor just shovel the roofs.
.. Cars, that don't move for more than two days, get buried -- and found next spring. Spring comes late to the high country. There will be bits of snow well into June this year. It'll hide in north-facing shadows and under the boughs of conifers. It'll melt slowly and feed the trees and fishes. It'll fill the lakes and reservoirs.
.. If it's a wet spring Ennis and Livingstone will try their best to move downstream in the high runoff. Don't pray for rain, it melts the snow, it gorges the rivers, it rearranges the gravels, it makes a mess in the lowlands. Will it hurt the golf courses? The mind does wander.
.. There's things to do in the winter, in the high country. Beside attending to the sidewalk; there's flies to tie, lines to oil, tackle to attend too, and guns to clean again. There's food and mail to retrieve. There's rooms to clean and rearrange. There's visitations and business and even some ice hockey, skiing, and skating.
.. The deep snow is always with us. Visitors see plowed streets and call it wonderland. They're here for a week at most. They marvel at the beauty. They write home, email their friends from the wifi in the motel, and make a few calls -- they never shovel a sidewalk. They get escorted to the park and never get their ankles cold -- such is the business of postcard living.
.. The post card does not include snow flies: wingless or winged, ( #1 - #2 - #3.) It doesn't include the dogs that freeze to death. It doesn't include the engine blocks that crack and the batteries that burst. It certainly doesn't include the broken bones and bruises that even the experienced gather up in the winter. It is a pretty post card though - the mind does wander.
.. As the unseen sun brightens the cloud cover, bustle appears. The kids go to school, the snow coaches rattle the windows as they rumble past, the sleds zip about and dogs do their business in a hurry. The grocery store opens: trinket shops at 10:00 or so, no hurry in the winter. Kitchens come to life and snow gets kicked off boots a thousand times an hour. At the post office, in the deli, in the diner, at the school, at church, at the city offices, at the gas stations, in homes, on construction sites. Snow is moved in big and little pieces all day long. It's here and that's that! Put it in a postcard home.
.. It's time for biscuits and gravy and, some people-watching. Look at all the new down pants. Look at all the down parkas. Look at the new boots. Couldn't perform a bit of shoveling in that giddy-up! The mind does wander. We're planning a golfing trip.
