    The Real Best Breakfast

    IN THE WEST
    Your Palate Counts
    not hype: just great !
    EVER BEEN TO HELENA ?
    -------
.. We refuse to believe that fly fisher folk are as gullible and susceptible to hyperbole in radio advertising as some local merchants seem to believe.  Then again . . .
.. We've eaten at all of these joints below. They are miles above anything locally.
.. And, they are reasonably priced. Try them next time you are out and about and need The Best Breakfast West Of The Mississippi, (unless you have indiscriminate and plebeian tastes and, believe everything you hear.)

    SO HERE THEY ARE:
    >> LITTLE GOAT DINER
    >> AMAZING CREPES
    >> STEVE'S CAFE
    >> 5 SPOT
    >> GLO'S CAFE
    >> ORIGINAL HOTCAKE HOUSE
    >> MOTHER'S BISTRO & BAR
    >> LUNCH BOX DELI & BBQ, (#1, #2,)
    >> PEG's GLORIFIED HAM & EGGS
    >> MAMA'S
    >> CAFE DE LA FLOR
    >> BRIAN'S 24
    >> CAFE 222, (#1, #2,)
    -------
.. The cool down has slowed and it looks like some softer and warmer weather is coming this way.
.. Nights will be slightly cool and there may be some light showers and scattered thunderstorms in the next few days forecast. Fish now!
.. There are widely scattered temporary and permanent road closures throughout Yellowstone National Park. These will impact some fishing access. Check the YNP CURRENT CONDITIONS page for alerts and road closures.
    LITTLE BROWN TROUT
.. There are still hoppers park wide. On sunny afternoons the Lamar River is crowded and the fish still like their hoppers, (or beetles, or small streamers.)
.. The smoke comes and goes up on the Gallatin River in the park.
.. Deepest Fan Creek is inaccessible due to trail closures and fire crew activity.
    WORKS AS AN INDICATOR TOO
.. The junction meadow is running slow and the water is not holding much other than the nursery fish.
.. Up high on the Gallatin River the willow meadows in the far 'n' away sections are smoky, tangled, and holding some nice fish. They are taking mostly ants and beetles, (float 'em or sink em - don't seem to matter.)
.. Don't plan on too much action with the runners on the Madison River. The rumors are true but, the biggest fish are still staging in the estuaries of Hebgen Reservoir.
.. The gulpers are petering out and the winds have been early in the day for a week or so. Work, instead, the weed beds with big ugly flies or leeches - unless, of course you are addicted to watching your fly bob around in the breeze.
    MASHED CADDIS
.. We don't often say it but, the best catching right now is the easy morning fishing on the Firehole River.
.. If you can forego the second cup of coffee and get to the river to follow the edges of the morning shadows you could wear out your reel hand.
.. Stick with the easy stuff: a mashed caddis on the surface, small hoppers or ants, hopper dropper with a flymph and you're in the groove. Don't catch them all. Have brunch about 11:00 AM and call it a day.
.. Or, trundle over to Baker's Hole and fish where the folks aren't. We're headed there now.

    FIRE WATCH

    MAPLE FIRE EXPANDS
    Traffic Control In Place
    brunouts planned
    animals on the move
    WALLPAPER:  ANGLER PREPARATION
    -------
..The Maple Fire has grown about 1,400 acres overnight. The inversion has maintained and the fire direction has not changed,(LINK-MM.)
    .. A community meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, August 22, 2016 (LINK-CC.)
.. It will be held in the:
     Union Pacific Dining Hall,
    220 Yellowstone Avenue,
    West Yellowstone, MT 59758,
    6-7 pm
UNION PACIFIC DINING LODGE - WEST YELLOWSTONE
.. National Park Service personnel will be on hand to give fire updates and answer questions.
.. Right now the west entrance road is still open. Fishers on the west side of Yellowstone National Park are advised to avoid fire areas and obey traffic controls.
.. It is advisable to make sure that your bear spray is up to date and carried in your hand when not fishing.
.. The mega fauna of the region have responded to the smoke and fire in unpredictable ways. Normal feeding and migration routes are disrupted and many large fauna may become disoriented - especially bears.
.. Catching is still excellent on the GALLATIN RIVER and BACON RIND CREEK. The smoke is pretty thick on FAN CREEK.
    FRIENDLY  CALIBAETIS
.. Early morning Trico hatches are pretty consistent along the shores of estuaries on the HEBGEN RESERVOIR.
.. The Trico spinner fall and the emergence of Calibaetis combine in some areas to make positive fools of the gulpers. In other areas some fish seem to key on one or the other of the bugs. Keep your fly box handy - or two rods!
    CUTE TRICO
.. Many fishers bail out from fishing when the wind comes up. That's fine for those that want to avoid an excellent catching opportunity. Just because the fish don't have their noses in the air doesn't mean they stop eating.
    JUST LOOK DOWN
.. The Calibaetis weed beds are full of nymphs, leeches, small fish, and snails.
.. These are also food items for the trout - duh!  The feeding triggers within fish are not halted between one food source and another one.
.. The neighbors, (many of whom depend on fish for protein,) hang out on the weed beds and fish for the submerged fish - wind or no.
    USE A SNORTLE
.. Leech imitations on the edges of the weed beds are excellent attractors. Large nymphs in weed pockets can be worked in an up-n-down slow jigging motion and slid along the edges of the weeds in the open areas.
.. Even big and ugly attractor flies will bring a fish to the net.

.. Well, the temperature is getting low on the BBQ. Got to soak some more hickory and adjust the dampers. It's tough but somebody has to eat it.

    Hopper Harvest

    VERY HOT AHEAD
    Fly Shop Bias ?
    you watch-we'll catch
    COURTESY USA TODAY
    -------
.. There is a single cloud in the sky and it's rapidly disappearing. It's becoming a symphony of long transparent white strings. It'll be gone soon.
.. The forecast calls for some rare 90's over the weekend. The office pools and the pub pools are filling up. Get your number before Thursday.
    RIDING THERMALS
.. It' not just us. The whole nation, (yes even Alaska,) will experience some interesting temperature ranges for the next couple of months.
.. As an aside: the neighbors who plant corn may see some full ears, ever bearing strawberries may continue until October, Dairy Queen will make enormous profits, ice sales will skyrocket, model airplanes will be blessed with strong thermals, fishers will abandon mid day fishing early, and fishers may not get back to the rivers in the evenings.
.. Contrary to popular belief and the extensive rumor factory in West Yellowstone; we do fish quite a bit.
.. We even catch a few fish. Sometimes more than a few. We've learned not to offer unsolicited advice. We've learned to just watch as visitors dash to rivers and leap in to start fishing.
.. We keep our thoughts quietly to our self as fishers are more eager to wet their pants waders rather than watch the river. We've learned not to giggle too loudly as we watch folks spend more time changing flies than fishing flies. We've learned quite a bit over the last 14 lustra or so.
    WON'T FLOAT
.. When asked what we're using to catch so many fish while others are catching fewer, we tell the truth. They are sadly disappointed. The damn flies are usually subsurface offerings.
.. They are old fashioned. And they are not in the fancy fly boxes of the fisher that asked the question. We offer a couple of ours as gifts. They are usually refused. They don't float.
.. We do our best to offer the trout of the neighborhood the food that they are probably eating. Most trout food is in the water rather than on the water - no matter what the newly arrived counter help tells you.
.. Trout seldom stop hunting and eating. They don't wait for minuscule bugs to pop up to the surface before they eat. Sad but true!
    WILL FLOAT
.. We get chastised for not fishing dry flies. For us catching a fish is an important part of fishing.
.. To set the record straight we do fish the dry. We often hear the purist talk about blind casting and blind fishing. There is nothing blind about being able to read the water and catch a fish where they are hiding. Oh well.
.. For many fishers it's how to fish for fish rather than catching fish. We've seen times when folks will spend $500.00 for a boat ride with a very competent guide and catch no fish. But they did it right. Dry or die. Catching seems very remote in their heads. To each his own.
.. We've been told, (by visitors,) that (insert famous feather merchant name here) only reports the hatches of surface bugs. They do this because that's when you can catch the most fish! Really? Is this a bias against catching fish?
    From:  Andrew Heard
.. Perhaps it is a bias toward a technique that attracts the big spenders. The elitist attitude engendered by Frederic Halford in the late 19th century has carried down to the contemporary anglophile of the modern stream.
.. Americans seldom acknowledge their debt to jolly old England. Dry fly fishers deny that they are elitists. They do, however exhibit characteristics that hearken back to centuries old attitudes. Form over substance was the attitude of the chalk stream fisher - Skues be damned.
.. The disdain of Halford echoes today in the attitudes of the dry or die crowd:
Those of us who will not in any circumstances cast except over rising fish are sometimes called ultra purists and those who occasionally will try to tempt a fish in position but not actually rising are termed purists... and I would urge every dry fly fisher to follow the example of these purists and ultra purists.
    — From A History of Flyfishing, Bark, 1992
.. It must only be sporting to catch fish while it is eating a minority part of it's diet - and on the surface - and exhaust them - only to release them. So be it.
    GALLATIN CONFLUENCE MEADOW
.. Halford was a rich elitist, had little experience with sunken flies, arose late in the day, took winter vacations out of England to avoid the weather, and set the pattern for folks that dry fly fish today. Most of the modern feather merchants have adopted the same sort of predilection.
.. As for catching fish; the Gallatin River is experiencing a massive influx of visiting fishers.
    HOPPER CLOSE UP
.. Of course hoppers, caddis, ants, beetles, and other bits of fish food are plentiful.
.. Catching can proceed all day, (even in an 80° F afternoon.)
.. The hoppers are mature and plentiful. Fish will love them either on the surface or drowned.
.. The Gallatin River demands that you fish to the food. There can be hatches of heroic proportions but there is not a good way to predict them.
    ALL PURPOSE FOOLER
.. The warm bright days combined with the cool water of the river produce exceptional hatches.
.. They are localized and dense. They sneak up on you, explode, and vanish quickly. Be quick to change a fly and you'll have an hour of frenetic catching.
.. If you happen to be on the Gallatin River it might be worth your time to investigate Bacon Rind Creek.
    LOVE THE UNDERCUT BANKS
.. It's a favorite of some of the neighbors. The hoppers seem larger. The water is thin with nice deep feeding holes. The meadow is handy for the fish because of the dense willow shade and the need for fishers to walk away from their car and through some dense vegetation. Short casts, short leaders, and long quiet stalking will pay off.
    THE UNVISITED FIREHOLE
.. The upper Firehole River is a pleasant refuge if you find yourself in the Old Faithful area.
.. There is an easy path. There is shade and sweepers. There is a giant population of eager Brook Trout that seem not to care if their food is on the surface or on the bottom or anywhere in between.
    FISH DA BOX
.. For those fishers that want large fish and don't mind dredging the bottom for them we suggest that you visit a foreign country.
.. The Box Canyon of the Henry's Fork River in Idaho is about in perfect shape and just full of giant fish.
.. Gather up a good boat, (or walk a lot,) get a guide familiar with the subtleties of the "BOX" and have at it. This is a good place for big and ugly flies.
    REAL FISH EAT REAL FOOD
.. Despite what you may have heard - trout appreciate groceries delivered in large packages.
.. As bright as it's been the shade and boulder hides will deliver on their promises. Just be sure that your leader is strong and your fly is deep.
.. We've seen some spiffy cell phone photos of fish from Slough Creek.
    Big Fish Food
.. A couple of kids from Nebraska in a road weary Subaru provided the following. (second hand report:)
"Took a couple of dozen good fish on streamers. Had to sleep in the car. Too dusty. Hot as Omaha. Not many hatches. Crowded. Used bass flies."
    It's A Green One
.. We believe them. But, there have also been reports of the mighty Green Drake hatch starting. This is the holy grail for those that need to see their fly.
.. The bugs are big and the fish can make fools of themselves at times. At other times it only looks like they are eating what you are seeing.
..With our heat the mornings are usually dead still. This draws the gulper crowd to Hebgen Reservoir. The most popular, (though not necessarily most catch friendly,) area is the weed beds in the Madison Arm of the reservoir. It is close to town. It's easy for boat launching. It's praised far and wide by famous gulper fishers.
.. Interestingly most, if not all, weed beds of proper depth and exposure produce the sought after callibaetis flies. The ones at the end of Horse Butte have the flies and are also full of leeches and snails. Lots of fish there.
.. The South Fork Estuary has some magnificent weeds and is a nursery fishery. That's why big fish fishers haunt that area - ask some counter help.
.. The road along the "other shore" of Hebgen Reservoir is closer to the mountains, (by many miles.) It's in a wind shadow and gulper fishing over there can last way past noon - long after the other folks have been blown off the reservoir. Take your choice and decide what you want.
.. It's approaching the hottest part of the day. Time to finish lunch and head to the empty water of the Gallatin River. The hoppers will be dancing nicely. The ants will be busy. The beetles will be rumbling. There will even be a few caddis around. We'll even take a dry fly or two in case we get tired of "blind casting."

    Opportunities Abound

    GULPERS ON THE LAKE
    Hoppers On The Wing
    oinkers in the weeds
    WALLPAPER:  HEBGEN RESERVOIR SANS WATER
    -------
.. On those rare mornings when the clouds are sparse and the wind forgot to wake up, Hebgen Reservoir is alive with sipping and slurping sounds of trout inhaling callibaetis on the surface.
MY WHAT BIG EYES YOU HAVE
.. Just munching along like Pac-Man, are the gulpers of the still and quiet mornings on the lake.
.. Although not necessary, a long and precise cast will bring more fish to net.
.. Some folks park their tube, (or boat, or raft,) right amongst them and do fairy well too. Of course the gulping always stops too soon - damn the caprice of the bugs.
.. Folks usually head to shore for an early lunch when the surface action stops.
.. There are, despite rumors to the contrary, still fish to be had. They are in the same places. In the same weed beds that gave birth to the callibaetis so recently departed.
.. These are not the "good fish" from the pods so recently dispersed. These are the behemoths of the deep. They may have joined in the recent surface feeding but, they have returned to their dark holes in the weeds.
.. We've been given permission to show the fly that will entice and take these fish. Thanks go to Francisco "Paco" Valenti, an avid fisher and varmint hunter, for the permission to photograph the fly and present it here.
    DANGLE THESE FOR "GOOD FISH"
.. Paco calls it the "VIXEN BUNNY,"  [zorro femenina conejito.]
.. It's a fairly standard fur strip streamer. It's made from the urine stained, soft, inner thigh fur on a female red fox.
.. It's tied on a hook with a spring-form weed guard. It has a stiff looped tail support. It probably imitates a leech - who knows?
.. Fish the fly in the dark holes in the weeds. Fish right where the gulper action was and weeds are the thickest.
.. Let it sink for a few seconds, (or more.) Get it in the weeds. Strip it in slowly, (figure 8 style,) all the way back to your boots. Move the low rod tip very slowly from side to side as you strip it in. You will take some "Hero Fish." You won't have to take an early lunch.
.. You'll have to tie your own. The guides, feather merchants, visiting sports, and counter help don't have them. They are only interested in "good fish," not the resident monster fish. Besides that, an early lunch and a cold one are always on their agenda.
    WALLPAPER:  VIXEN BUNNY
    -----
.. Further up the road along the Gallatin River, (and it's seldom fished tributaries,) the hoppers are very active: so too the ants.
    SOME ARE IN THE WATER
.. Ants on the ground; ants in the air; ants everywhere. At least they are, when it warms up and the clouds part and the cool showers abate for long enough to warm them up.
.. The fish seem to be in a most willing mood near the park line.
.. Afternoon caddis are popping even on overcast days and even in the wind.
.. The mantra for this part of the Gallatin River is "Walk a little; catch a lot." We walk a lot and catch a little - it's our curse.

    Know Your Foe

    WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY
    Callibaetis Notes
    get thee to hebgen lake
Confused Female Callibaetis Ovipositing On A Rock.
    -------
.. When the smoke from wildfires makes the moon red and the sun is a giant orange blob in the hazy sky, it's callibaetis time at the old homestead.
    Art Deco Kodak
.. Take your camera along and celebrate photography. It seems that every fly fisher is a closet shutterbug. August 19, is World Photography Day, so unmask the Ansel Adams child inside of you, limber up the old Kodak, and take a few snaps.
.. Out on Hebgen Lake, (and a few other lesser known stillwaters,) the bugs have been popping for some time. Some of the neighbors have been on the reservoir for weeks. Most of them wait until it's just sheer masochism on the rivers before they migrate to the reservoir.
    Wading for Gulpers
.. The migration is on. Drift boats, float tubes, rubber rafts, john boats, ski boats, and various other sundry craft have taken to the weed beds.
.. There are quite a few places along the shore of the reservoir where wading will  get you into the noses as well.
    Gulper Getters
.. Out of tradition we refer to this part of the fishing calendar as 'Gulper Time.'  It's a truism for sure. But the bugs are the stars. The callibaetis mayfly goes through several hatches during the year, (mostly summer.)
.. Each successive hatch produces a smaller insect. There are always a few million bugs that are out of synch with the general population - so - there are bugs on the water all the time.
.. By this time of year the flies emerging, and on the surface, can be of different generations. This means different sizes.
.. Fishers often don't notice the difference. Fish always seem to notice the difference.
    Visiting Male Callibaetis
.. As Matilda once said: "SIZE MATTERS."
.. The pattern of the fly is, in this instance, truly far less important than the size and silhouette of the pattern.
.. The season usually starts with a size 10 or 12. By this time of year the bugs can range from 10 to 16, (some bigger and some smaller.)
.. Frequently the scenario is confused by a massive Trico hatch as well. Fish, being what they are; and trout being what they are wont to be, this can be confounding to the fly fisher.
THE HERE AND NOW OF GULPERS
.. Occasionally the fish will bump floating fishers as they rise, (can you cast that short?)
.. Sometimes the noses surround the boat just a few feet away, (photo-op, anyone?)
.. Frequently a cast of 25' or so will place the fly in the right place, (good for the mere mortals among us.)
.. All too often it takes a perfectly placed fly at a distance of 50' or 60'. This requires that your shorts be ripped as you perform wild gyrating motions and strain to get your fly in position with that fancy new four weight rod that was so appealing in the catalog.
    Gulpers In The Weeds
.. As Snagglepuss is often heard to exclaim: "Heavens to Mergatroid, the bug is the enemy - not the fish!"
.. So then, hie thee to thine own favorite stillwater. Start early when the breeze is just a whisper.
.. Use a stick and line combination that gets the fly to where it belongs and the noses are thick.
.. Pick a pattern that matches the size and shape of what you think the capricious fish are gulping.
.. Fling it in front of a 'patterned riser.' And hang on. The big fish ascend from the depths to enjoy the feast.
.. We're off to the fire.
