    Firehole Follies

    UNOFFICIAL RECORD SET
    New Lake Created
    one on the madison too

    -------
.. Yesterday during a brief rain and hail shower, about 1:15 PM, the Firehole River topped 1,100 cfs on the charts.
.. If the data is confirmed it will be a new record discharge for the little stream that is normally flowing at about 450 cfs for this time of year.
.. The river is out of it's banks from upper Biscuit Basin, on the Little Firehole, clear down to Mallard Creek.
.. A steady stream of long time residents have paraded into Yellowstone National Park to record the history-making event with their cameras.
.. Some fishers call the color of the water "tea stained." It's rather closer to the color of the stuff that a sick baby leaves in it's diapers, (about the same consistency too.)
.. Catching was, to say the least, very slow. A couple of the neighbors spent 12 hours up and down the river to see if fish could be caught anywhere.
.. As much due to persistence as skill, or guile, or technique, several nice fish were taken, (though not at Biscuit Basin.)
.. Monstrous Golden Stonefly imitations were followed by giant bead head Prince Nymphs to accomplish the task.
.. The classic high water hides are where the fish were: next to the bank, back eddy's, below big snags and sweepers, and down deep. Good on 'em, and bless their hearts.
.. We left about 3:30 PM, just as the holes in the clouds were closing up for some more rain.
.. The rampaging waters may continue for another 3 - 4 days. The color will improve some as the discharge rates decline. If you're planning a trip to fish in the next 10 days check with one of the fly shops listed in the sidebar. They have staff busy being disappointed too.
.. There were bugs about 2:30 PM, and reports of a good evening hatch around 7:00 PM also. We have no reports of fish sipping flies in the top of the soup.
.. Time to go back and see what else is not fishing too good. A couple of snapshots of BISCUIT LAKE and Midway Run are posted below. All are big enough for wallpaper if you choose.
