    Be Bear Aware

    ON THE MADISON
    Or Near Enough
    escaped one
    RIGHT THAARRRE !
    -------
.. It's in the news. You can read about a summer resident that was attacked by a grizzle bear. Knocked down. Used a quick draw technique for bear spray while face down with the bear on his back.
.. Sprayed the bear. The bear left.

    NEWS RELEASE . . .  courtesy FWP
A 17 year-old male was attacked by a bear south of Ennis on Sunday. He fortunately survived the attack with relatively minor injuries.
The teen and his family were visiting their cabin in Wolf Creek, about 30 miles south of Ennis, on the east side of the Madison Valley. He was out looking for shed antlers in the area.
According to the teen, he was walking down a hill around 2 p.m. when he heard a “thump” behind him.
He turned around to see a bear charging at him. The teen was carrying bear spray, but he was unable to deploy it immediately because of the bear’s rapid approach. The bear pushed him up against a tree and held him there momentarily.
When the bear let go, the teen fell over and attempted to crawl between two trees and protect his head and vitals. The bear then pinned him face-down on the ground.
The teen, who was wearing a hoodie and a backpack, said he was able to reach over his shoulder and spray the bear with bear spray, and the bear left.
The young man began walking out and made radio contact with his family. He was treated for his injuries at Madison Valley Medical Center and later released.

    -------

.. The National Park Service reports a bear attack incident. A 10-year-old boy was knocked down near Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park.
..  The sow grizzly charged from the undergrowth and began to maul the downed child who had run from the bear.
.. The child's parents sprayed bear spray in the face of the bear and it dashed away.
..  The Spring Creek and Divide trails are temporarily closed.

.. A man attacked a woman in Yellowstone National Park in the restroom at Mammoth Hot Springs cabins' community restroom.
.. The assailant wrapped toilet paper around his head and used bear spray to assault the victim and her boy friend that tried to protect her [[Casper Star-Tribune.]]

    ROYAL COACHMAN BOMBER
.. The Bacon Rind Fire has been knocked down by cool weather and some light rain. It is currently being monitored by interagency fire teams.
.. The Madison River has cooled down to the point that fish are, once again, becoming willing dance partners.
.. Early morning spinner falls, (the likes of which we haven't seen in a few years,) are sucking fish to the surface.
SURFACE STREAMER - RED FOX RUNNER
.. Late afternoon caddis are making their appearance on the bright smoky days.
.. Catching in the dark, (until sundown,) has been productive near undercut banks with large splashy surface flies. Keep them on the top and rapidly strip downstream for best success.
.. If you keep the rod between your legs while rapidly stripping with both hands - be sure that your knees are tightly locked together - wham, bam, . . .

    Mythic Madison

    BEARS FISH HERE
    Walk Just A Bit
    unmolested fish
    FISH WHERE THE BEARS FISH
    -------
.. This year there has been a fishing bear at GRASSHOPPER BANK on the Madison River.
.. Most visiting fishers will never see the bear. Most visiting fishers will not take advantage of the pods of large fish that fin and flop lazily in the dark water of this bit of the river.
.. It takes just a small walk to get into position to fish for the trout. However it will put your car out of sight. Crouching and duck walking is not in the mindset of the average fisher visiting Yellowstone National Park.
    TAKE SOME
.. Hell's Bells, if you can't jump into a school of fish and splash to the center of the river in order to fish the bank  --  it taint "fly fishing."
    .. We've seen the bear.
    -----
.. Today's rain is perfectly gentle and inviting. Mid day catching will be very productive. We'll take some fresh bear spray. The exercise will guarantee a good night's sleep.

    A UNIVERSAL TREAT
    Yellowstone Invention
    please be bear aware
    CARRY BEAR SPRAY
    -------
.. This is the month of "Most Outdoor Camping," in Yellowstone National Park. Although it's too hot for most of the neighbors it is just right for visitors.
.. Of course many of the campers are also fishers. These are the folks that are savvy enough to pick a place near the best morning hatches.
    PARACHUTE ANT
.. Slough Creek is in fine fettle and many fishers from far and wide are camping in the Lamar Valley.
.. The catching is good and the eating is as well.
.. There are gentleman's hatches and the terrestrial critters are active as well. Slough Creek has warmed rather quickly this year and it's best to schedule an early morning foray near the campground and lower meadow.
    BEAD HEAD WHAATZITS
.. There are fish to be had on the surface - for the careful and stealthy fisher. Use little ants, small beetles, and maybe a midge or two.
.. Great success is being had by the neighbors that are fishing "bead head anythings." They should be small and either in the seam near the bank or way down deep and slow.
.. Fishers on both the Lamar River and Soda Butte Creek are being being treated to the Bison Olympics. If you are not in shape for the wader waddle sprints it is best to keep a weather eye out and walk a bit further than you have planned.
    YELLOWSTONE BADGER
.. The poor sister of the north is the Gardner River. Both inside Yellowstone National Park and just outside the catching has been nearly spectacular this year. Nothing fancy is required.
.. Use your favorite small golden stone imitation or a nondescript nymph in the seams, pillows, slicks, etc.
.. The Rainbow trout are among the prettiest in the park. This is a stream with browns, cutts, white fish, rainbows and the occasional brookie down low.
    FUZZY GOLDEN
.. Get yourself further into the park from the north entrance and there is a wonderful Brook Trout fishery just below and mostly above Osprey Falls.
.. Walk a little and fish a lot - catch bunches! Take the husband and kids. Have a trail side picnic. Take pictures. Enjoy the shade. Make a day of it.
.. Today is the festival of cars in West Yellowstone. The 46th annual rod run has been in town for a couple of days. This morning is the parade and show and shine in the city park. Music, food, and cartoon cars the way we wished they were 60 years ago.
.. We're headed to the crowded "downtown" of our village. It's a neighborhood tradition.
