Enter Winter

BRIEF SLOW DOWN
Neighborhood Active
fun flies already
WALLPAPER:  READY AND WAITING
-------
.. So then, we got Thanksgiving out of the way. Now there's just Christmas and the rest of Winter to go.
..Catching excursions have slowed somewhat for the holidays. Up here we chase those fish right through the Winter. We have to. Sanity, don'tchaknow?
THE "SF CADDIS"
.. The neighbors have already entered their dual role of fly experiments and experimental testing.
.. In a post-Thanksgiving fit of neatness and creativity, (while dispensing with the leftover stuffing and adult beverages,) they gathered round the vises and toyed with some materials.
.. Several of the bravest had made a raid on a local feather merchant and peeked at the commercial flies. They were dutifully ignored as slovenly 'locals' and, had time to finger the offerings from far off lands.
.. On the Gallatin River, right now, the "SF CADDIS" is undergoing testing. There is probably a conventionally sanctioned name for this fly. If there is they did not remember it. The beverages took hold and the silhouette was seemingly, (to their milky eyes,) reminiscent of the dorsal fin of a sailfish.
.. Testing will destroy the dozen or so flies already completed. They will be floated, sunken, smashed, loaded with all manner of floatants, drifted, stripped, and fished with gay, (and hung over,) abandon: reports will follow.
.. We're out to shovel some snow and then a nap.

Turkeys That Moo

BEING THANKFUL
Beef Is Beautiful
a metaphorical turkey
WALLPAPER:  ROAST BEAST
-------
.. We have had another light dusting of snow on the ground. It's almost enough to satisfy the folks in the ski camp: not quite. The sled heads just power through the gravel and speed up to the mountains.
.. Catching down the canyon on the Gallatin River is still excellent. Small streamers, large nymphs and, in the evening something stripped wildly on the surface near the bank will all bend a rod.
.. We are thankful for the local rivers: neighbors, friends, and the ability to reject turkey for a chunk of beef. Around here we call it a turkey and gobble it down.
.. Soon there will be more snow and the opening day of Yellowstone National Park. Then thundering hoards of visitors will arrive - just in time for Christmas. For that we're thankful.
.. Take five and remember this is the season for a bit of joy and some exceptional fishing.
.. Now for the grub!

Take The Time

POSTMODERN
Post Apocalypse
post rational
PAUSE FOR JUST A MOMENT
-------
.. We could live at a different place - why? It's 5:00 AM and dark. The streets are quiet. There's snow on the ground. There's snow in the forecast. There's fish to be caught. The coffee is hot. Tomorrow will be just as good - or, better.

15 Years Of Secrecy ?

FAR FAR AWAY
Not A Real Secret
some neighbors fish it
WALLPAPER:  "THE" BEAVER? POND
-------
.. It's a long and winding road to The Beaver? Pond. The scenery is wonderful and the mansions are nicely placed in scenic settings. The fish are not giant, (usually.) The fish density is very high this year and, in most years.
DAM IT ALL
.. Just like all streams with beaver ponds, (or other impoundment structures,) the fish density depends on many things.
.. How secure is the dam? How fierce was the Spring runoff? Are spawning gravels nearby? Is the stream fertile, very fertile or not so fertile? How deep is the pond? Are there good hides? Is there a river current coursing through the pond? Does it carry tasty morsels of trout food? Etc.
.. Perhaps the most important factor in fish density is the longevity and maturity of the pond. This factor influences and is influenced by the morphology of the pond and the volume of water throughout the year. The upstream gradient and basal substrate are factors as well. Sand, silt, clay, gravel and bedrock come into play.
TOTEM FOR CORPS OF ENGINEERS
.. As a beaver pond matures it generally gets more shallow and the circumference increases, (undercut banks, etc.)
.. The Beaver? Pond currently is approaching maturity and the fish density is exceptionally high this year and in years of normal runoff. A channel is just now forming and the bottom is small gravel and coarse sand. Fish now!
.. We've watched this pond for over a decade and fish it once or twice each year. Below are some images of the evolution of the pond.

LAST YEAR
.. Depending on how you access the pond and the stream you may need permission. Please be sure of your rights and responsibilities before wetting a line. Access by boat is the easiest if you don't know the neighbors.
.. Watkins Creek is home to wild native Cutthroat Trout and the source of exceptional academic information. The fish have served as wild brood stock for study and transplanting. Release them all and treat them with gentility and respect.
.. By Summer of next year we trust that you will have forgotten about this little bit of water. We wish you luck on the glory waters of the Yellowstone region.
.. Well the storm has started so, off to the news stream --- after some good grub.

Denouemont

ABUNDANT WET LOVE
Moon Behind Clouds
finally; some snow
WALLPAPER:  MID NOVEMBER WEATHER
-------
.. The first half of November has been warmer than many summer days. This is hopefully about to end.
LOCAL LOVERS
.. There's a bit of snow forecast for mid week, along with some cool weather - for a brief period. We'll be back in the 40's by the weekend.
.. We went outside early this morning to see the super moon and discovered the eastern sky lit up like neon behind the thin clouds of an impending winter storm. Asi es la vida.
COME ALONG SALLY
.. Fish have been cavorting in the shallows and seem to be very happy to do so.
.. Although fishing in the park is over, the walk and ride sign is out and the neighbors get some genteel and free access to the west side wonders. This is a little known tradition that, (in weather like this,) is greatly appreciated by the high country village dwellers.
-----
ON THE DIRT FOR NOW
.. There are some lovely neighborhood streams that are producing exceptional catching opportunities.
.. The South Fork of the Madison River is coming into it's own. The flow is low and cold and the migrants are bunched up in the deep holes and outside bends of the river.
.. No need for a snowmachine this year, but the tour company operators are gearing up for the inevitable storms.
.. The little trickles on the Continental Divide side of Hebgen Reservoir are loaded with migrants and very few elbows. The neighbors with enough money for gasoline have been enjoying both the weather and the catching.
.. Down canyon the Gallatin River has slowed considerably and the warm weather has kept both the water and the bugs in unbelievable catching shape. There are still some spruce moths, beetles, and ants on the water. The caddis have slowed - only to be replaced with an early swarm of midges. What a wonderful Autumn this has been!
THE DOUBLE MIDGE
.. For all of these places a greased soft hackle followed by a nymph on point is all that is needed.
.. Adjust the sizes and depth of the dropper for the water and you'll do well with a gentle stroll along the bank.
.. If there are noses to be seen and, you can see the wee flies, a double midge pattern will poke those noses nicely.
.. It's been unseemly crowded along the lowland Madison River. Happy wet dogs, pretty pink and blue vests, some owner rowed boats and guides have been doing the late fall polka. It shan't last too much longer.
ANTICIPATION
.. Both the Reynolds Pass parking and the Three Dollar Bridge access have seen summer-like crowds and vehicles. Soft hackles and/or big nymphs are just fine for these sections. Noses will occasionally happen and the mayflies can be used should you choose to limit your number count.
.. Not to put too fine a point on it but a couple of neighbors have fished the shadows at dusk Between The Lakes. The much scorned and mightily maligned mouse along with giant streamers on the surface have nailed some trophy fish - released with cell phone verification of course.
-----
.. Without a local newspaper it's mandatory that we make it to the post office early, then to the hardware store, and finally to the grocery store. This for news that's not spread through the pubs.
.. So then, time for petit dejeuner - or some such.
