.. In the pause that refreshes, between morning catching and the onslaught of the madness that is caddis time, there is an opportunity to have lunch, contemplate one's navel, and take a nap - OR - tell lies in a dim pub or the musty aisles of a feather merchant, (or even catch some monster fish.)
..The Summer showers have been sparse and the clouds spectacular. The under appreciated bank-side grasses have done fairly well considering the continuing drought.
.. These grasses harbour wee small critters that are active in the warmth of the afternoon sun. The grass is tall enough this year to cast shadows on the water and cool the bank-side undercuts where huge trout take refuge from the brightness.

LOCAL BANGER

.. If a wee small critter plops into the water above a reclusive trout it is history. Yes Martha, even in the warm waters of the lazy Madison River, a fish will eat a juicy bug if it falls into it's mouth.
.. Deny the nap. Avoid the pub. Let the liars hold forth on their own. Take a stroll in the noon day sun - along with the mad dogs and Englishmen.
.. Grab an extra long stick. Hang a heavy line on it, (at least two weights over rating.) End the line with a short, (three or four foot leader / tippet.) Sneak along the bank very slowly with just the tip of the rod extended over the water. Work downstream.
.. Dribble and dap your favorite terrestrial in the water at two or three foot intervals. You won't see the take - BUT - you will know when it happens. Don't catch 'em all!
.. Smile and wave at all those experts in the cool water that are exercising their waders and 12 foot leaders.
.. Time for our nap.
