Just Had To
RARE FEBRUARY PHOTOS
Mid Winter Warm-Up
the bears are awake and shopping
WALLPAPER: MID WINTER SHOPPING SPREE |
-------
.. For the next two weeks or so the diurnal temperatures will, or should, climb to - or above the point of freezing. Scattered flurries of snow should continue and the sun should make an appearance. We're astounded and pleased... Maybe some fajitas on the BARBEE !!

A DRY VILLAGE

even the fish are happy
WALLPAPER: 360° DRY |
-------
.. It's mid February. It's nearing 50°. The roads in the village are dry. The Alleys are mud and drying. The fish have discovered a different photoperiod. The coyotes are horny. The grizzly bears are awakening. The ravens are paired up... It looks like Spring. It Feels like Spring. It acts like Spring. Spring snows and rains are a major part of our water year. Look out Mable.
ENTER YELLOWSTONE |
.. There is both joy and consternation in our village. Of course the neighbors enjoy the warm. The skiers have to walk to the trailhead instead of blocking all traffic lanes. The sledheads have to endure 5 or 6 blocks of muddy alleys to get to the mud of the forest and climb to the snow. Obsolete vehicles with skis for steering are not doing too well on the park roads.
.. Time for a late breakfast.

The Depths Of Winter
WHO'D 'UH' THUNK IT ?
Records Falling Like Rain Drops
fishing picks up - not on the ice
-------
.. It's hard to fathom the depths of despair that the winter guides in Yellowstone National Park are encountering. .. It's easy to appreciate the joy in the neighborhood as the kids run to the river in shorts to catch lunker trout in these calm and sunlit days.
.. See y'all later.

SNOW PACK DIMINSHIED
Runoff Increases
neighbors retreat to kitchens
MUDMOBILE |
-------
.. The warm dry winds pooped out late last night and have left dry pavement in their wake and the sledheads are forced to use the mud and slush alleys to navigate through town... A glance at the new snotel sites for the last few days tells the tale. We've lost 5% in the last nine days. More snow is needed to get us into the good zone for adequate summer stream discharge.
.. We're suffering through some small dustings of intermittent, very light snow flurries and peak diurnal temperatures in the mid to high 30's. Trail muck runs from slimy, to slick, to goopy. Most of the neighbors have called off fishing for the moment and are staying warm by the wood stove in the kitchen.
.. A couple of the neighbor kids went down to the Madison River between the lakes. Caught a few fish and reported on slow action, no midges, gusty winds, and ankle deep muck. No noses in the air, nymphs and buggers rule.
.. We're going outside and watch the school kids splash in the puddles.

From Out Of The West
GENTLE BREEZES -- NOT!
Scudding Clouds & Rustling Trees
magical disappearance of snow
..
-------
.. It started at about 4:00 AM. It was 35° F by 5:00 AM. by 11:00 AM the 10" hard snow pack on our streets, (reserved for snowmachine travel,) was just so much slush. The winds aloft were variable between 80 mph and 140 mph. Temperature in the village at 1:30 PM was above 46° F. It continues to blow... The trails to our neighborhood fishing spots are mucky with mud and slush - suspended on the surface by the frozen ground. The fish are possessed of a friendly demeanor and dancing with the goo-covered brave souls at the water's edge.
.. Rain and some wet snow for the Sabbath. Get out the Seal Dry Waders.
